Medacta Announces 1st NextAR Augmented Reality Surgical Application in the US

The anatomic shoulder replacement procedure is a sustainable and innovative solution that respects each patient’s anatomy.

Medacta Group SA announced the completion of the first anatomic shoulder cases using the NextAR, Augmented Reality Surgical Application in combination with the Medacta Shoulder System (MSS) in the United States.

NextAR Shoulder is a sustainable and innovative solution that leverages augmented reality to assist trained surgeons in accurately placing shoulder prostheses while respecting each patient’s anatomy.

The accuracy and precision of NextAR Shoulder have been demonstrated by Rojas JT, Jost B, Zipeto C, Budassi P, Zumstein MA in a recently published study, showing low deviations between planned and postoperative parameters.

“Medacta’s NextAR computer-assisted navigation for reverse shoulder replacement surgery has been a ground-breaking technology that has reshaped my practice. I am very excited to be able to use this innovative technology now for anatomic shoulder replacement surgery as well,” stated John-Erik Bell, MD of Dartmouth Health System. “It enables me to optimize the position of the glenoid component in terms of retroversion, inclination, backside contact, and rotation, and also to minimize the risk of peg perforation. NextAR navigation allows me to execute my preoperative plan with precision and confidence.”

This anatomic application completes Medacta’s existing NextAR Shoulder surgical platform by offering surgeons an advanced tool for shoulder replacement procedures

NextAR Shoulder includes a proprietary tracking system that provides real-time guidance for instruments and enables accurate implant positioning. An advanced and intuitive software application also enhances the overall surgical experience.

NextAR Shoulder is part of NextAR Augmented Reality Surgical Platform for both joint replacement and spine procedures, hosting software for multiple applications (NextAR Knee, NextAR Shoulder, NextAR Spine). It is a vital component of the MySolutions Personalized Ecosystem, a network of advanced digital solutions designed to improve patient care and surgical outcomes.

The entire shoulder portfolio is supported by educational offerings provided by the M.O.R.E. Institute. The M.O.R.E. Institute includes an international network of expert surgeons and is at the forefront of education on shoulder procedures and products with personalized high-level educational pathways.
